    Plaquenil induced hyperpigmentation

One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

We report two cases of hydroxychloroquine‐induced hyperpigmentation presenting in a 50‐year‐old Caucasian female case 1 and a 78‐year‐old female case 2, both receiving 400 mg per day. Case 1 had an arthritis predominant undifferentiated connective tissue disease, which was treated with hydroxychloroquine for 4–5 years. Hydroxychloroquine HCQ-associated hyperpigmentation is uncommon, with onset ranging from 3 months to 22 years following the initiation of therapy1. A 32-year-old woman presented with a 1.5-year history of symmetric polyarthritis, positive rheumatoid factor, and anticyclic citrullinated peptide antibody, without erosive joint changes. It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Although hydroxychloroquine toxicity is more known as affecting the eyes, it is also associated with skin hyperpigmentation regardless of the duration of the treatment. The main risk factors are conditions that lead to easy bruising; the skin biopsy usually shows deposits of iron and melanin found in previous ecchymotic areas. Drug-induced nail disease is diagnosed when a medication affects nail growth or structure. Stomach problems with Plaquenil • Johns Hopkins Arthritis. Question. I started taking Plaquenil 4 weeks ago for non specific autoimmune disease as indicated by ANA. Symptoms were low grade temperature off and on for a year, joint pain and fatigue. I have already felt some relief. Some nauseau at first but less problem with fever and joint pain. But, now I have started having stomach cramps and diarrhea.
