    How to wean from plaquenil

I don't know if anyone can help as this isn't technically lupus related. I've been on plaquenil for 6 months for suspected Sjogren's syndrome (I don't have antibodies for Sjorgren's or Lupus but I do have Hashimoto's and have all the symptoms for Sjorgren's so the rheumatologist suggested a trial of plaquenil).

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is considered an older DMARD disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria. Generally, Plaquenil is a treatment option as monotherapy used alone for mild rheumatoid arthritis or as combination. Several risk factors may increase the likelihood of retinal toxicity from Plaquenil such as, age of greater than 60 years, daily dose more than 6.5 mg/kg; use of the drug more than 5 years, obesity, preexisting retinal disease and, renal or liver failure. Early detection of the maculopathy is of critical importance to discontinue Plaquenil in. If your ophthalmologist finds any signs of retinal damage, he or she will tell your primary care doctor or inflammatory disease specialist to stop Plaquenil treatment immediately. This will help you avoid permanent vision loss. Your other doctor will find another treatment for your disease.

I *think* I'm improving but it's been a gradual process and I said to him that it's quite hard to tell how much of an improvement I'm feeling. Basically I've been on the drug since January and saw the rheumatologist on Wednesday to see how things are going.

I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Been on Plaquenil only for ten years for sarcoidosis. Once in awhile I also had to have a burst of prednisone. I have been weaning off since my sarcoidosis has been stable for eight years. I went from 400 mg. Daily to 200 daily to 200 every other day over the course of six months. I stopped it about 10 days ago and I feel like I’m 90 years old. Here are 10 things to keep in mind when using Plaquenil Take it on a regular schedule, meaning at the same time each day. Take Plaquenil EXACTLY as prescribed by your physician. Do not stop taking the medication without first speaking to your doctor. Taking Hydroxychloroquine with food and/or milk can help prevent stomach upset.

Inflammatory Osteoarthritis And Plaquenil Plaquenil reduces inflammation in many Rheumatic disorders, the mode of action is pretty complicated though so I shan't bore you with all the details, but basically it prevents your dendritic cells these are messengers for your immune system, if you will from interacting with your T-Cells a special type of white blood cell which through a convoluted and boring process, causes inflammation.

Chloroquine and Proguanil - Superdrug Health Clinic Chloroquine is an antimalarial. It is used to prevent malaria and it is also used as a treatment for acute malaria. Chloroquine by itself is not recommended anymore due to the widespread resistance to it. Therefore, chloroquine is now used in combination with proguanil for travel to certain countries.
