Chloroquine has a relative called hydroxychloroquine Paquenil, that is supposed to be a less toxic metabolite of chloroquine. It is used to treat rheumatic diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren’s syndrome. However, according to what I had recently heard, Paquenil was not being used to treat COVID-19. Chloroquine is a 4-aminoquinoline with antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, and potential chemosensitization and radiosensitization activities. Although the mechanism is not well understood, chloroquine is shown to inhibit the parasitic enzyme heme polymerase that converts the toxic heme into non-toxic hemazoin, thereby resulting in the accumulation of toxic heme within the parasite. A quinolone antibiotic is a member of a large group of broad-spectrum bacteriocidals that share a bicyclic core structure related to the substance 4-quinolone. They are used in human and veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections, as well as in animal husbandry.

Chloroquine is also used to treat amebiasis (infection caused by amoebae). Chloroquine is used to treat and to prevent malaria.
