Prophylaxis for international travel to chloroquine resistant area

Updated information reflecting changes since publication can be found in the online version of this book (gov/yellowbook) and on the CDC Travelers’ Health website (gov/travel). The information was accurate at the time of publication; however, this information is subject to change at any time as a result of changes in disease transmission or, in the case of YF, changing country entry requirements.

In addition, in areas with low-to-moderate levels of malaria transmission and with chloroquine resistance e.g. parts of south Asia, southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and South America, WHO and ACMP recommend a combination of chloroquine and proguanil as first-line chemoprophylaxis. For travel to areas where chloroquine resistance is present, mefloquine is the only medication recommended for malaria prophylaxis during pregnancy. Studies of mefloquine use during pregnancy have found no indication of adverse effects on the fetus. Experts are evaluating the safety of atovaquone-proguanil use during pregnancy. Apr 15, 2002 Chloroquine is the drug of choice for people who travel to these areas; however, resistance to chloroquine is now widespread in all areas of the world where malaria is endemic, but it is still an effective choice for prophylaxis in travelers to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Argentina.

Arguin (Malaria) The following pages present country-specific information on yellow fever (YF) vaccine requirements and recommendations (Table 2-06) and malaria transmission information and prophylaxis recommendations. Country-specific maps of malaria transmission areas, country-specific maps depicting yellow fever vaccine recommendations, and a reference map of China are included to aid in interpreting the information.

Jul 23, 2014 Chloroquine is used for the prophylaxis of malaria in areas of the world where the risk of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria is still low. It is also used with proguanil when chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria is present. However, this combination may not be ideal. Recommended by CDC and others as a drug of choice for prophylaxis in those traveling to areas where chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum malaria has been reported; 115 121 134 also can be used for prophylaxis in those traveling to areas where chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum has not been reported. Consequently, the indications for prophylaxis are identical to those described for adults {01}. Mefloquine may be considered for use in children when travel to areas with chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum is unavoidable {01}.

Experiences taking Plaquenil for Fatigue and Muscle Pain. I agree with CameronC and all others who are "pro" Plaquenil. I was diagnosed with Limited Systemic Scleroderma in late 2001 & started Plaquenil at the beginning of 2002. Joint and muscle pain and overwhelming fatigue were my worst symptoms.
