Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water to at least 20 percent; chemically the drug is 2-4-7-Chloro-4-quinolylaminopentylethylamino ethanol sulfate 11. PLAQUENIL hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets contain 200 mg hydroxychloroquine sulfate, equivalent to 155 mg base, and are for oral administration. Hydroxychloroquine is considered safer than chloroquine during pregnancy and lactation. Hydroxychloroquine is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and steady-state concentrations are reached after 4–6 weeks; 45% of hydroxychloroquine binds to plasma proteins that are deposited in tissues such as the liver, spleen, kidney, and lung. Three anti-malarial drugs are prescribed for lupus symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the most commonly prescribed because it is generally believed to cause fewer side effects; chloroquine Aralen has a reputation for more serious side effects, but it may be prescribed in situations where hydroxychloroquine cannot be used.
