    It regulates the activity of the immune system, which may be overactive in some conditions. Hydroxychloroquine can modify the underlying disease process, rather than simply treating the symptoms.

    Plaquenil takes quite a long time to get to its peak effectiveness depending on what you read, anywhere from 3 months to a year. Unless you are having significant side effects, try to give it at least 6 months before you decide it doesn't work for you. Hydroxychloroquine plaquenil and sulfasalazine azulfidine are used for mild rheumatoid arthritis. they are not as powerful as other dmards, but they usually cause fewer side effects. If the plaquenil is helping and they say you need it, I'd take it - the side effects will go away. I've not had experience with sulfasalazine - but from what I've read, the side effects of that med are about the same as those of plaquenil. BTW - sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory.

    Hydroxychloroquine is often taken in combination with other drugs such as methotrexate. Over the long term hydroxychloroquine can reduce pain, swelling and joint stiffness. It may be as long as 12 weeks before you notice the benefits.

  3. You should not use hydroxychloroquine if you are allergic to it. Hydroxychloroquine should not be used for long-term treatment in children. To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have a history of vision changes or damage to your retina caused by an anti-malaria medication;

    I have been diagnosed with Limited Scleroderma. My choices are Methotrexate, Plaquenil or Sulfasalzine Azulfidine. I researched them and determined Plaquenil would be my last choice, although it was his first, because I already have lattice degeneration of the retina in both eyes and one of the potential side effects is retinal problems. Hydroxychloroquine doesn’t work immediately. It may be 12 weeks or longer before you notice any benefit. Because it's a long-term treatment it's important to keep taking hydroxychloroquine unless you have severe side-effects even if it doesn't seem to be working at first; even when your symptoms improve to help keep the disease under. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is considered an older DMARD disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug. Plaquenil was actually first classified as an antimalarial drug, but it is also used to treat certain rheumatic and autoimmune conditions which are unrelated to malaria.

    Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can influence sexual function due to several reasons, such as pain, restricted joint movements, fatigue, and problems with self-esteem and body image. Angioedema - nih.gov Angioedema can be caused by either mast cell degranulation or activation of the kallikrein-kinin cascade. In the former case, angioedema can be caused by allergic reactions caused by immunoglobulin E IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to foods or drugs that can also result in acute urticaria or a more generalized anaphylactic reaction.
