Any of you out there have solar urticaria? If so, what has been helpful. Solar urticaria is a rare photodermatosis characterized by pruritus, stinging, erythema, and wheal formation after a brief period of exposure to natural sunlight or an artificial light source emitting the appropriate wavelength. A week ago, I just took my first dose of a medication called hydroxychloroquine, also known as Plaquenil. It is commonly used to treat autoimmune diseases and has been used to treat others with the same rare condition I have that causes me to be allergic to ultraviolet light, solar urticaria.

If large areas of the body are affected, the loss of fluid into the skin may result in light-headedness, headache, nausea and vomiting. This may be put down to acclimatisation or 'hardening' of these chronically exposed areas.

  7. Now I'm wondering if the plaquenil IS the cause, as two weeks ago my immunologist upped my dose from 600mg to 800mg. I have not noticed any change in my UV allergy solar urticaria still the same but maybe the Plaquenil is now suppressing my immune system successfully.

Solar urticaria, also known as sun allergy, is a rare allergy to sunlight that causes hives to form on skin that’s exposed to the sun. The itchy, reddish spots or welts usually appear within minutes of sun exposure. They can last for a short time or up to hours. The cause of solar urticaria is not known. I also have a positive ana test. for many years i was treated for lupus with plaquenil. i have seen numerous derms and given up over the course of that journey. finally, i was correctly diagnosed with solar urticaria! anti-histamines are the drug of choice but they are not applicable for me as i have a paradoxical reaction to them. i do know. Solar urticaria SU is a rare condition in which exposure to ultraviolet or UV radiation, or sometimes even visible light, induces a case of urticaria or hives that can appear in both covered and uncovered areas of the skin.
